Penn State Promises Protections for LGBTQ Community Members

Pennsylvania State University has reassured its LGBTQ community members of protections, as U.S. President Donald Trump is moving ahead with his plans of redefining gender.

The university, while voicing concerns over the change in gender federal civil-rights laws, promised its community members to maintain a violence- and discrimination-free campus.

According to a New York Times report last week, the Trump administration is in middle of making changes to the definition of gender to be determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.” The move can have a drastic impact on federal protections offered to transgender people.

We are committed to promoting and sustaining a campus environment that is safe and respectful for all members of our community, including those of all gender identities and expressions,” President Eric Barron said.

“The rights of all individuals — including LGBTQ people and all underrepresented groups — are fundamental to a climate of inclusiveness that allows everyone — students, faculty, staff, and visitors — to work, learn and live in an atmosphere that is free of harassment, prejudice and intolerance.”

The university already has many affirmative action policies in place for the LGBTQ people enabling equitable treatment in terms of providing equal access to admission, employment, and programs among others.

“We understand that members of our LGBTQ community may be concerned, or may feel vulnerable at this time of uncertainty. In addition to policies that prohibit discrimination and harassment in any form, Penn State has a number of resources available for transgender and gender diverse people,” Barron added.

The university has also called upon its community members to report the incidents of sexual misconduct, harassment, and violence to its Office of Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response.

Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals who experience sexual or gender-based harassment, misconduct or violence, can report incidents through the University’s Office of Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response.
